The purpose of Sports Massage is to :-

• prevent sports-related injuries
• improve performance and endurance
• relieve post-event pain and stiffness
• return muscles to normal faster
• improve blood supply, separate fascial binding, stimulate arousal
• soften scar tissue
• relax, increase self esteem, create body contact
• increase lymphatic drainage
• broaden muscle envelopes, free up adhesions
• increase muscle health, trigger points, pain
• release neuro-vascular entrapments
• relax fascial tethering, dissolve crystals
• release blocked energetic segments
• reduce joint pain by direct loosening of capsule, ligaments and muscles
• soften hardened tissues, increase confidence, awareness and well being

Pre- and Post-event
Helping an athlete prepare for, and recover from , a competitive event is an important part of sports massage and one that requires a fairly open minded approach. All athletes have their own unique way of coping, both physically and mentally, with competitive situations, and if this has worked well for them in the past then why alter a good thing.

Sports Injury
Doing too much of a particular exercise fatigues the tissue and can cause damage. This should never occur in training, though it often does. But it can easily happen in competition when an athlete pushes him/herself to the limit and therefore runs the real risk of over exerting. Similarly, problems can arise if training sessions are too frequent, with insufficient time for the tissues to recover fully in between.
