Therapeutic treatment for eating disorders

Breathe provides a research based treatment programme for eating distress i.e. Anorexia, Bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive eating and failed dieting. Breathe uses an holistic and integrative treatment model founded by The National Centre For Eating Disorders and involves the combined use of interventions delivered through an overall patient-centred approach. This includes:

  • Psycho-education
  • Motivational enhancement therapy
  • Cognitive behavioural techniques
  • Nutritional counselling
  • Dietetics

The treatment enables people to explore and understand themselves and their needs better. Clients learn what precipitates, perpetuates and pre-disposes them to what is currently keeping them unhappy and in self-destructive behavioural patterns and habits. Through this new self awareness they develop new goals and strategies in every area of their life and learn how to work towards them.

Shelley Perry is the Director of Breathe. She is a registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with 12 years experience in mental health and therapeutic treatments with specialist training and accreditation in eating disorders through The National Centre for Eating Disorders. She is a professional member of the NCFED, B-eat, Anorexia & Bulimia Care, Sedig and the RCN.

Shelley has a personal experience of eating disorders and has been recovered for 12 years.

The Philosophy of Breathe

Breathe believes that all individuals have a plan and a purpose for their lives and that with encouragement and support they can be released to find and enjoy it.

Breathe Aims

  • To provide a local and accessible specialist service for those with eating distress
  • To provide a confidential, professional and individualised treatment package in a safe and therapeutic environment
  • To provide a challenging but positive journey experience towards emotional and physical wellbeing
  • To engender hope and a message of recovery and wholeness

How To Breathe

Call Shelley for an informal chat about the service and request a list of useful resources free of charge, along with a questionnaire about your lifestyle and eating habits. This will inform and direct your individualised treatment plan. Shelley will also advise you how to be referred to the service.

The initial assessment will last 2 hours. Sessions are then booked in 6 weekly blocks and your treatment and progress will be reviewed and evaluated at the end of each six weeks. The first 6 week sessions will last one hour fifty minutes. To get the most from your treatment programme it is advisable for sessions to be on a weekly basis.

You will also see our specialist dietician initially on a weekly basis and then as required.

After your initial assessment, appointments can be made directly through Fulwood Therapy Centre. This is open 6 days a week. Messages for Shelley can also be left with the Centre's receptionist.
